Named in honor of General “Mad Anthony” Wayne, who was one of George Washington’s generals during the Revolutionary War, the small town of Wayne, Maine is a lakeside community, bounded on the south by the Adroscoggin Lake and on the north by Pocasset Lake. Wayne was first incorporated in 1798 from New Sandwich Plantation. Because of it’s proximity to seven different lakes and ponds, Wayne sees a dramatic increase in residency during the summer months. It is home to the Androscoggin Yacht Club and the birthplace of notable 19th century opera star Annie Louise Cary.
