Portland Maine Dining: DiMillo’s Restaurant
Tony DiMillo opened his first restaurant, “Anthony’s” in 1954 on Fore Street, in Portland, Maine. In 1960, Anthony’s Restaurant moved to Center Street, and in 1965, Tony opened “DiMillo’s on the Waterfront,” just across the street from where it sits now. DiMillo’s Restaurant quickly became one of Portland’s most popular restaurants. In December 1982 “DiMillo’s Floating Restaurant” opened when a converted car ferry became the only floating restaurant on the upper East Coast. The restaurant rises and falls with the tide twice a day; The outside decks are great spots to watch the sights and sounds of Portland harbor while enjoying a meal or Cocktail. My question became, “but what about the food?” Well, the salad was fresh and crisp, the bread crusty and warm (not hot, very important), and the Shrimp, Scallop, and Lobster Alfredo served on Al Dente pasta was outstanding.
The fried Maine Shrimp was perfect and moist, and the Baked Stuffed Haddock was delicious. The best of course was the perfectly prepared Lobster. DiMillo’s has been known for serving ocean-fresh Maine Lobster since 1954. Be sure to try the Bread Pudding with Bourbon Sauce for dessert, other good tested desserts are the Maine Blueberry Cobbler, and the Apple Crisp.
This fabulous floating Restaurant has an ever-changing view (the yachts next door are also to drool over), and you feel like you are walking down a hallway of history as you enter the dining room. Dimillo’s is not just for the tourists; many locals (Portlanders) can be seen on the outsider deck having a pre-dinner cocktail or appetizer.
