Acadia National Park is a great place to vacation. With plenty of activities both indoor and outdoor there is something for everyone here. Acadia National Park originally began in 1916 as a monument and was named Sieur de Monts National Monument. When the land became a national park in 1919 it was named Lafayette National Park. It was not until 1929 that the park was renamed Acadia National Park. Some of the outdoor activities that Acadia National Park has to offer include Bicycling, Boating, Climbing, Fishing, Hiking, Horseback Riding, Scenic Driving, Swimming, and Tide pooling. Some indoor activity options include Hulls Cove Visitors Center or the Nature Center at Sieur de Monts Spring Area. The Abbe Museum is also at Sieur de Monts Spring Area and tells the story of Maine’s Native American heritage. The Islesford Historical Museum on Little Cranberry Island shares the story of the Cranberry Isles and its people. Acadia National Park is actually a collection of Maine Islands – which make up the park. The highest peak on Mount Desert Island is called Cadillac Mountain. Acadia also features the downeast lighthouse known as Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse.
