York is a town which is proud to say has retained a great deal of its historic heritage while keeping pace with modern living standards. York is the second town going north on Interstate 95 or U.S. Route 1 after entering the southern tip of the State of Maine with a population of 12,854. York is comprised of 2.78 square miles of water and 54.91 square miles of land or a total area of 57.69 square miles. The town name York came from York, England and was incorporated in 1652.
A popular summer resort community, the population of York quadruples during the vacation season. York Harbor is a fashionable resort area at the mouth of York River. US 1A parallels Long Beach, a two-mile stretch of sand and rocky coastline. Boon Island and Nubble Lighthouse are visible from the shore. York Beach is a popluar swimming and amusement center.
The Stonewall Kitchen Cafe is located in York, Maine. Stonewall Kitchens is a Maine specialty food manufacturer and has a retail store, company headquarters and cafe style restaurant that is open to the public.
The Elizabeth Perkins House in York, a one-room structure built in 1686, has undergone much change. Elizabeth Perkins and her mother, Mary S. Perkins, brought about most of the additions and restorations from 1900 to 1935. A prime example of Colonial Revival architecture, the house is open for tours from mid-June through September.
