First incorporated in 1881, Van Buren, Maine is named after the 8th President of America and saw a large influx of Acadian refugees who were fleeing the British. Soon after, a prolific lumbering and farming economy was developed, and the Aroostook Railroad arrived in 1905. Van Buren sits directly across the Saint John River from Saint-Leonard, New Brunswick in Canada.
