Located in the northwestern region of Androscoggin county, the small town of Turner, Maine was first settled by Abner Phillips, Joseph Leavitt, Elisha Record, Thomas Record and Daniel Staples in 1772. Almost all of Turner's first residents were from the region around Plymouth, Massachuetts. Like many of the towns in the Lakes and Mountains region of Maine, Turner is surrounded by multiple bodies of water, including the Androscoggin River and the Nezinscot River. Originally a farming community, Turner quickly became an industrious town with sawmills, gristmills, tanneries, paper mills, shoe factories and more.
Turner is home to the Turner Center for the Arts and two historical landmarks; the Old Town House and the Leavitt Institute Building. Notable residents have included the actor, Patrick Dempsey and Maine Republican Senator (1836 - 1918) Eugene Hale.
