First incorporated in 1800 from Pennacook Plantation, the town of Rumford, Maine boasts that Pennacook Falls are the highest falls east of Niagara. With a more than 170-foot drop of the Androscoggin River over solid granite, there is no doubt Rumford's 'Great Falls'are an impressive sight. With such an overwhelming amount of water power readily available, Rumford has been a strong mill town since the opening of its first paper mill in 1893.
Rumford is home to the Black Mountain of Maine Ski Area, which is noted for its Nordic Skiing facilities and has hosted multiple national and world cup events. This mill town is also filled with impressive examples of Edwardian and Victorian architecture, most notably the historic Strathglass Park.
