First settled by Europeans in 1810, Parkman, Maine was named after Samuel Parkman of Boston, one of it's earliest landowners. Parkman's most famous native was Victor A. McKusick, Professor of Medical Genetics and Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, MD. McKusick, who is often cosidered the father of clinical medical genetics, studied the Amish and authored several books on genetic studies.
