First settled in 1794, the town of Oxford, Maine started out as a farming community witha focus on hay and cattle. With the development of water power and the arrival of the railroads, Oxford became a mill town. The railroad brought several tourists and Oxford offered several lodging establishments as well.
Each year, Oxford hosts the annual Oxford County Fair, and it is perhaps most well known for being the home of Oxford Plains Speedway - an auto racing venue that includes NASCAR, drag, and go-kart racing. Built in 1842, Oxford's Congregational Church is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
