First setteld in 1774, Orono is home to the Univerisity of Maine. Orono was named after Joseph Orono, a Penobscot Indian Chief who helped the Americans during the Revolutionary War. In addition to being home of the University of Maine, Orono also houses the Lyle E. Littlefield Ornamentals Trial Garden, and the Fay Hyland Botanical Plantation. Famous residents of Orono include poet Constance Hunting, novelist Dorothy Clarke Wilson and Wallace R. Farrington, former territorial governor of Hawaii.
