Located 18 miles north of Augusta, the town of Oakland, Maine boasts four major waterways for the enjoyment of its residents and visitors alike; McGrath Pond, Salmon Lake, East Pond, and Messalonskee Lake and Stream. Throughout its history, Oakland has had several different names including Taconet, Kingsfield and West Waterville. The name was eventually changed to Oakland in 1883 to describe all the beautiful oak trees that have grown here.
Oakland was first settled by New Hampshire and Massachusetts colonists in 1780. The primary economic structure of Oakland was driven by dairy and farming, several mills and factories, and the manufacture of farming tools. At one point, Oakland was considered the axe and scythe capital of New England.
