New Sweden, Maine is located in the north central region of Aroostook County, just northwest of Caribou, Maine. In 1870, Maine created a public policy to encourage population growth after the post-Civil War westward migration. As a result, a large population of Swedish immigrants settled in both New Sweden and nearby Stockholm, Maine. Much of this community's Swedish heritage continues to be preserved today through festivals and historical societies. One of the most popular New Sweden festivals is the Midsommar Festival, a Nordic festival held in June each year.
