Settled in 1807, the town of Newport, Maine rests on the banks of 6-mile long Sebasticook Lake, and has always been a prominent recreational center for this area of Penobscot County. Long before Newport's first settlers arrived it was a popular hunting and fishing spot, with many Maine trappers spending a large portion of their trapping season here. Newport is home to the Mullen Woods Nature Preserve, which features the remains ofan old brickyard and granite foundations, as well as old-growth hemlock and white pine.
