The town of Mount Vernon, Maine was first settled by Massachusetts native Captain William Whittier in 1770, and was named after President Washington's famous Virginia estate. Mount Vernon was home to two different Maine governors; Dr. John Hubbard and Jonathan Hunton. It is also home to multiple lakes and ponds including; Echo Lake, Long Pond, Torsey Lake and Parker Pond.
Mount Vernon boasts a booming traffic of summer vacationers who stay at many quaint lakeside cottages each year. Mount Vernon is home to Camp Laurel summer camp and the Five Seasons Family Resort. Like many other small commuities surrounding Augusta, Mt. Vernon has transformed in recent years into a bedroom community for the larger city.
