Situated where the Penobscot River meets the Mattawamkeag River, the small Maine village of Mattawamkeag started out as a railroad community. The first railroad company to reach the area of Mattawamkeag was the European & North American Railway, which arrived in 1869.
Located in Mattawamkeag, the George W. Smith Homestead is a historic landmark and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Mattawamkeag is also home to the Mattawamkeag Wilderness Park, a popular site for campers and hikers coming to this area of Maine.
