Madawaska, Maine is located in the northeastern region of Aroostook County, near Edmunston, New Brunswick in Canada. Because of its proximity to Canada, French is the native language for a large percentage of Madawaska residents. Madawaska is the northernmost town in both New England and America.
Originally home to the Micmac Native Americans, this community was first settled in 1750 by Acadians. Madawaska is the Native American word for 'river having its outlet among reeds and worn out grass'. The paper industry is a major contributor to Madawaska's economy, with the Fraser Paper Company being its largest employer.
