Lubec succeeded Eastport as the sardine canning capitol of the United States. The last sardine packing plant in town, Lubec Packing, ceased operations in late 2001, ending a long history in this industry. The R.J. Peacock Canning Company, a former sardine cannery, now processes salmon. Another venture at the Peacock site is a sea urchin hatchery. The town name Lubec comes from the German town of that name.
