Litchfield, Maine is located 16 miles southwest of Augusta, in southern Kennebec County. It is a rural/suburban town, with 37 square miles and an annual growth rate of over 3 percent for the past 25 years. Litchfield has a small commercial village area at the north end of Woodbury Pond. This pond, as well as several smaller ponds and Cobbosseecontee Stream, account for 1/4 of the town's housing stock in the form of seasonal homes. The Maine Turnpike traverses Litchfield without an interchange. The town name Litchfield was named by the General Court in 1795 when it was incoporated after Litchfield, England. In southern New England there is a Litchfield, Connecticut.
