Linneus, Maine is located in the southeastern region of Aroostook County and was named after Swedish botanist and father of modern taxonomy, Carolus Linnaeus. In 1804, Boston granted the land area of Linneus to Harvard University in order to endow a botany professorship. Like many other small towns in the region, Linneus was in close proximity to Houlton's military post.
