Located on Grand Isle in the Saint John Valley of Aroostook County, Lille, Maine is home to a large Acadian culture and the remarkable Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church. Now known as the Musee cultural du Mont-Carmel, it is the most architecturally significant and most intact of historic Acadian wooden Catholic churches in the Saint John River Valley and is listed on the National Register. Not only is this incredible building a cultural museum, it is also a performing arts center, and it is being restored by the non-profit L'Association culturelle et historique du Mont-Carmel.
The name Lille is a "[Corruption of] French for "island," describing the island in the St. John River."
