First settled by Joseph Clark in 1789, Levant was known as Kenduskeag Plantiation until its incorporation as a town in 1813. The town's founder, Major Moses Hodsden, built a store, a blacksmith shop, a rist mill and three houses in the early days of Levant. One of Levant's most famous natives was William Thomas Haines, who served as Governor of Maine from 1913 to 1915.
