Located less than ten minutes from Bangor, Kenduskeag, Maine was first incorporated from part of nearby Levant and Glenburn in 1852. Kenduskeag is the Maliseet indian word for 'eel weir'. Early explorer Samuel de Champlain discovered Indians trapping eels along the Kenduskeag River in 1604 as he was exploring the Penobscot River region.
Kenduskeag is the starting point for the annual Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race. Held each April, this race is one of the largest paddling events in the United States and runs over 16 miles on the Kenduskeag River to where it joins the Penobscot River.
