Located in the central region of Penobscot County, Howland, Maine was first settled in 1818 and later incorporated in 1826. Becasue of its position on the Piscataquis, Penobscot and Sebois Rivers, Howland once had a thriving paper mill. Howland was named after John Howland, the first land agent for Augusta and a signer of the Mayflower Compact. Famous natives of Howland, Maine include professional WWE wrestler Scott 'Scotty 2 Hotty' Garland and Dr Perry Spencer, inventor of the microwave.
