Located inthe south central region of Kennebec county, Hallowell, Maine was named after Boston merchant Benjamin Hallowell. Hallowell's first settler was Deacon Pease Clark from Allteborough, Massachusetts, who arrived in 1762. Hallowell was known as 'The Hook' and once had a booming shipbuilding, logging, mill and publishing industry. At one time, the city of Augusta was part of Hallowell. Because it encompasses only five square miles, Hallowell is Maine's smallest city.
