First incorporated in 1834, the town of Greenbush, Maine was used by the regional Indians before being settled in 1820 by the white man. Greenbush rests on the banks of the Penobscot River and includes many islands on the river. The largest island in Greenbush is Olamon, the Native American word for 'red paint'. Olamon had a large supply of red ochre that the Indians would use for body paint.
