Located on the edge of the New Hampshire border and the White Mountain National Forest, the small Maine town of Gilead was first settled in 1780 by Samuel & John Bodwell and John & Oliver Peabody from Massachusetts. First called Sudbury-Canada, Sudbury was also known as Peabody's Plantation before its incorporation as a town in 1804. Gilead rests on the banks of the Androscoggin River as it enters Maine from New Hampshire and is known for its impressive views of the Presidential Mountain Range. Gilead lies northeast of Hastings and west of Bethel, Maine.
