Garland, Maine is near the geographic center of Maine in the foothills of the Longfellow Mountains of the Appalachian chain. Garland is 25 miles northwest of Bangor and 45 miles northeast of Waterville. It is 36 square miles in area. Garland was origially given to Williams college in 1796 but was later sold to investors. The town was named Lincolnville after Levi Lincoln who owned the land until 1811 when Joseph Garland, the first settler of this town invited the townspeople over his house to hold a petition for incoporation and voted for the town to be named after him.
