Fort Kent, Maine is home to the University of Maine at Fort Kent, annual CAN-AM dogsled races and an Olympic biathlete training center. Fort Kent was first settled in 1829 by French Acadians. In 1841, the fort was built and named after the Governor Edward Kent.
Located just across the St. John River from the Canadian towns of Claire and Saint-Francois-de-Madawaska, Fort Kent shares many cultural and economic bonds with both towns, including many fluent French-speaking residents.
