Eliot Maine was named for Robert Eliot, a member of the Provincial Council of New Hampshire. Eliot borders New Hampshire - the town is located on the Picataqua River - the river separates Maine from New Hampshire. The community was named for Robert Eliot, a member of the Provincial Council of New Hampshire.
Eliot Maine's early settlers were attracted to Eliot's prime fishing waters and abundant forests. The earliest settlers traveled the Piscataqua River in the 1600's. Eliot residents were farmers, shipbuilders, and brickmakers. In the late nineteenth and early twentyieth century many vacation cottages and summer camps were built in Eliot. Eliot became a cultural oasis of the Baha' I community.
Many historical photographs of life in Eliot Maine may be found at the William Fogg Library on Old Road in Eliot. The library was established in 1907 by a trust from Dr. John S. H. Fogg.
