First settled in 1800 by Ebeneezer Small, Dexter, Maine was first known as Elkinstown. Because of its proximity to Sebasticook River, Dexter developed a thriving water-powered mill economy. The town hub of Dexter is perched on the edge of 1,170 acre Lake Wassookeag, which provides the primary water source for the town's water system, as well as a variety of recreational opportunities.
Dexter is a historic town, with five separate buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places, including; the Grist Mill, the Bank Bloc, Zion's Hill, the Abbott Memorial Library, and the Universalist Church. Today, the Grist Mill is a museum and home to the Dexter Historical Society.
