Several colleges and technical schools are located within a forty mile radius of Casco including: Bates College, Bowdoin College, University of So. Maine, So. Maine Technical College, Central Maine Technical College, University of New England, and St. Joseph's College. The Casco has many different meanings but can all apply to Casco Bay. Casco may be a shortened word for what the Micmac Indians call "Aucocisco," which means "muddy."
The word Casco in Abenaki means "great blue heron." And the word Casco in spanish means helmet which was what Esteban Gomez thought the Casco Bay looked like when he was exploring the coast of Maine.
