Caribou, Maine is only 10 minutes from the Canadian border, and includes 10 golf courses within 60 minutes of the center of town. It is also popular for its vast snowmobile trails. The town of Caribou was named after the artic animals that were rarely seen this far south at that time. Caribou is where you will find the Nylander Museum. The museum is named for Swedish born naturalist Olof Nylander (1864 - 1943), who served as museum director. The Nylander Museum exhibits include minerals, marine fossils, mollusks, seashells and mounted animal specimens from northern Maine.
