Bethel was first settled by Nathaniel Segar in 1774 and went by the name of Sudbury-Canada. In 1781, Bethel was the very last community in the state of Maine to fall victim to Indian raids, and two of its residents, Nathaniel Segar and Benjamin Clark were held captive in Quebec until the war's culmination. The name Bethel was taken from the Bible's Book of Genesis, and literally means 'House of God'.
