  • Art - Jan 18 thru Mar 04 - Drawing with Seaweed: Celeste Roberge - PhoPa Gallery
Art - Jan 18 thru Mar 04 - Drawing with Seaweed: Celeste Roberge - PhoPa Gallery - Drawing with Seaweed presents a variety of Celeste Roberge's newest explorations with seaweed on paper, ranging from mixed media compositions incorporating seaweed, fabric and photographs to cyanotype impressions of collected seaweed. Celeste became interested in seaweed in 2008 while walking along Hirtle's Beach on the south shore of Nova Scotia. Attracted to the intricacy of patterns and variety of colors, Celeste began making sculptures of seaweed boats in wax, bronze, cast iron and brass, and in the seaweed itself. She studied the science of seaweed further, learning to identify various types, and soon began pushing wet seaweed around on wet paper. She says, "the more I manipulated the seaweed, the more I saw relationships with similar concerns in earlier art works and analogies to design and technology in fabrics and metals. I was smitten." Celeste Roberge was born in Biddeford, Maine. She lives and works in South Portland. She is Professor Emerita, College of the Arts, University of Florida where she was Head of Sculpture in the School of Art + Art History for twenty-two years. She received her MFA degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, BFA from the Maine. Opening reception on January 19 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Artist talk on Feb. 4 at 3 p.m. Exhibit on display from Jan. 18 through Mar. 4.

  • Art - Nov 10 thru Jan 28 - Rockport - Gary Briechle Exhibit - Maine Media Gallery
Art - Nov 10 thru Jan 28 - Rockport - Gary Briechle Exhibit - Maine Media Gallery - This exhibit will feature new photographic work and drawings by Gary Briechle. Briechle makes black-and-white photographs, often using a large format camera and wet plate collodion process. Turning to the family, friends, and moments closest to him for subject matter, Briechle does not shy away from dark or disconcerting imagery. Without judgment, he photographs the old and the young, the run-down and the beautiful, capturing an unfiltered and poignant reality. Of the medium, Briechle has said, "photography has the power to show the broken pieces, made whole again, for a moment." Within the same subject matter, Gary also experiments with drawing. His drawings capture the same essence and spirit as his photography, creating a cohesive body of work that is interesting to any viewer. Opening reception on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 5 p.m. Exhibit runs from Nov. 10 through Jan. 28, 2017.
