- Art - Apr 24 thru Dec 06 - Rose Marasco: index - Portland Museum of Art
Art - Apr 24 thru Dec 06 - Rose Marasco: index - Portland Museum of Art - The Portland Museum of Art is proud to present Rose Marasco: index, the latest exhibition in the PMA's Circa series. The exhibition is the photographer's first-ever retrospective, and the PMA is honored to bring it to its audiences. Rose Marasco is perhaps Maine's most-prolific living photographer, having lived and photographed in Portland and its surrounding communities for more than 35 years. The photographs in Rose Marasco: index are stunning and display extraordinary range, encompassing everything from her images of the urban environment to her unexpectedly poetic response to the natural world, and her exhaustive, thought-provoking examination of the domestic world of women, in which she layers historical objects with contemporary materials. It's this diversity of both subject and technique that has long characterized Marasco's artistry, and visitors of all interests and backgrounds will find something special to immerse themselves in. The exhibition is on view April 24 through December 6, 2015.
- Art - Jun 13 thru Jul 25 - Space, Place and Time - PhoPa Gallery
Art - Jun 13 thru Jul 25 - Space, Place and Time - PhoPa Gallery - Space, Place and Time combines photographic and sculptural works by Jay Gould. The work seeks to address the daunting task of photographing a reality that is often theoretical, ineffable and inaccessible by embracing a degree of poetic license. Drawing from four different bodies of work, the exhibition presents Gould's inquiries into scientific theories on space, relativity and perceived reality. Gould believes that we look to both science and art for similar reasons: not for cold calculation, but for a story or other curious connection. His connections blend empirical evidence with insight, inviting viewers to share in his sense of discovery, absurdity and emotion. Originally from Minneapolis, Gould current teaches at Maryland Institute College of Art (MICA) and has taught for many years at Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, Maine. The exhibit is on display at PhoPa Gallery in Portland through July 25.
