  • Art - Aug 29 thru Dec 09 - Broken Treaty Quilts by Gina Adams - USM Maine Woodbury Campus Center AREA Gallery
Art - Aug 29 thru Dec 09 - Broken Treaty Quilts by Gina Adams - USM Maine Woodbury Campus Center AREA Gallery - Its Honor is Here Pledged: Broken Treaty Quilts by Gina Adams on display at AREA Gallery, Woodbury Campus Center, Portland campus. Although she is half Euro-American, Gina Adams's art is primarily inspired by and deeply committed to the memory of her White Earth Ojibwa grandfather. The Native North American history of forced assimilation, along with the intimate process of making, drives her project of making quilts excerpting broken treaties from each of the US states. Seven quilts are featured here, including a Maine quilt referencing broken Wabanaki land claims treaties. Gina Adams' cross-media, hybrid artwork is exhibited extensively throughout the US and Europe and resides in many public and private collections. Events include a conversation with Gina Adams on Thursday, Nov. 3 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Also on Friday, Nov. 4 from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. there will be a powerpoint presentation by Gina Adams in the Burnham Lounge, Robie Andrews Hall, Gorham campus. Exhibit on display from Aug. 29 through Dec. 9, 2016.
  • Art - Nov 16 thru Jan 14 - Mark Marchesi Exhibit - PhoPa Gallery
Art - Nov 16 thru Jan 14 - Mark Marchesi Exhibit - PhoPa Gallery - Evangeline: A Modern Tale of Acadia features photographs by Mark Marchesi. This project is inspired by HW Longfellow's epic poem Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie. First published in 1847, the piece tells a tragic story about the expulsion of early French settlers in the mid 1700s from the territory that later became Nova Scotia. Mark took an interest in the poem and began photographing the Annapolis Valley in 2012. Today, much of the rural western shore is again declining in population. The abandoned properties, vacant ports and primordial landscapes in his photos represent his own modern tale of Acadia. Mark is publishing a photographic book that will be released in conjunction with the exhibit, which will be on display from Nov. 16 through Jan. 14. Reception and book launch on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 5 p.m. Artist Talk on Sunday, Jan. 8, at 3 p.m.

  • Art - Nov 10 thru Jan 28 - Rockport - Gary Briechle Exhibit - Maine Media Gallery
Art - Nov 10 thru Jan 28 - Rockport - Gary Briechle Exhibit - Maine Media Gallery - This exhibit will feature new photographic work and drawings by Gary Briechle. Briechle makes black-and-white photographs, often using a large format camera and wet plate collodion process. Turning to the family, friends, and moments closest to him for subject matter, Briechle does not shy away from dark or disconcerting imagery. Without judgment, he photographs the old and the young, the run-down and the beautiful, capturing an unfiltered and poignant reality. Of the medium, Briechle has said, "photography has the power to show the broken pieces, made whole again, for a moment." Within the same subject matter, Gary also experiments with drawing. His drawings capture the same essence and spirit as his photography, creating a cohesive body of work that is interesting to any viewer. Opening reception on Thursday, Nov. 17 at 5 p.m. Exhibit runs from Nov. 10 through Jan. 28, 2017.
