These writers are touched by what they see here, the beauty of the summer days and the quiet peace of winter. For them, Maine becomes a muse that enriches their work, and oftentimes, has brought about the most famous works of their career. Other authors choose to make Maine their home, providing them with the constant inspiration of their surroundings.

Famous Maine Poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow ME Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882)
Best known as America's first professional poet. Longfellow was born in Portland and attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME. His childhood home still stands today as an attraction to poetry and history lovers from around the world.

Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864)
Author of the classic "The Scarlet Letter", Hawthorne was a resident of Maine during his teenage years, living in Raymond, ME and attending classes at Bowdoin College.

Famous Author of Maine Harriet Beecher Stowe Uncle Tom's Cabin Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811-1896)
Best known for her novel "Uncle Tom's Cabin", Beecher-Stowe was a resident of Brunswick, Maine, and was famously credited by Abraham Lincoln for Maine's slowed economic development in the years following the Civil War.

E.B. White (1899-1995)
Moved to a farm in Brooklin, ME in 1938 and was inspired by a spider in his outhouse there, to write the classic children's novel "Charlotte's Web". Other novels by E.B. White include "Stuart LIttle" and "The Trumpet of the Swan".

Margaret Wise Brown (1910-1952)
A summer resident as a child, Margaret Wise Brown moved to Vinalhaven Island, ME in 1943. She was the author of beloved children's books such as "Goodnight Moon" and "The Runaway Bunny"

Tess Gerritson
Gerritson, who lives and writes in Maine full time, is a NY Times Best-Seller list author of the medical dramas such as "Life Support" and "Bloodstream"

Terry Goodkind
A fantasy author who moved to Mount Desert Island, ME in 1983. His work includes the "Sword of Truth" series including the novel and "The Wizard's First Rule" a book which at an auction in 1994, brought the most money of any fantasy novel in history.

Stephen King
Arguably Maine's most famous current resident, King has written many novels over the years. Some of his most well-known work includes "The Stand", "The Shining", and "The Dead Zone". He was born in Portland, ME in 1947 and currently resides in Bangor.
