Barren Mountain
Elliotsville Plantation: 3.9 miles , Beautiful strenuous climb. From road to summit is 4 miles, passable with four wheel drive vehicles.
Boarstone Mountain
Elliotsville: Impressive trail rises abruptly and passes beside a lake and along private chain of ponds. It then becomes narrow and goes through woods to fine views. 2 miles from road to East Peak. Elevation gain is 1100 ft.
Big Spencer Mountain
Wels: Although there is a steep climb to the top, glorious views of Katahin, Moosehead region, and Allagash wilderness lakes make the hike worth while. The trails are well maintained and ascents over boulders and roots are made easier by ladders. Base to summit is 2 miles. Elevation gain is 1900 ft.
Gulf Hagas
Bowdoin College Grant East: "Grand Canyon of the East" is what Gulf Hagas is often called because it offers hikers some fabulous views. Gulf Hagas is located in an area of land managed by the North Maine Woods Group. You will also find an area up here called Screw Auger Falls. You can also proceed north on the Applachian Trail toward Whitcap Mountain. Circuit route is 8.2 miles. Elevation gain is 600 ft.
Low Aziscohos Mountains
Lincoln: Climb ends in beautiful views of Rangeley lakes. Ascent is easy through woods on Firewarden's Trail. There is an option descent North descent. Road to summit is 1 3/4 miles. Elevation gain is 1700 ft.
Mount Katahdin and Baxter State Park
Katahdin is Maine's highest and most challenging mountains on the East Coast. The mountain is just shy of a mile high and the weather is very unstable. Your starting level is 600 feet and the trails rise extremely quick, about 2,00 feet every 2 miles. Although it is very challenging, once you are at the top, it is a sight to see. If a more comfortable hike is more your style, there are plenty of other trails within Baxter Park. There are a large number of campgrounds available and plenty of day hike are offered.
Mount Kineo
Kineo: This mountain rises dramatically from the middle of Moosehead Lake. There are magnificent views from the summit. Shorter branch of the trail is called Indian and ascends among cliffs. Bridle Trail is longer with no views and easier grades. Dock to summit is 1 or 2 miles. Elevation gain is 800 feet.
Peaked Mountain (Chick Hill)
Clifton: Extensive views in all directions from open ledges at summit. Trail ascends gradually along tote road. Base to summit is 1 1/4 mile. Elevation gain is 800 ft.
White Cap Mountain
Bowdoin College Grant East: Follow the blue-blazed White Brook Trail to AT. Then follow AT to mountain summit. Nice views of Katahdin and nearby mountains from plateau. Trail to summit is 1 1/2 miles. Elevation gain is 1600 ft.
