Maine Harness Racing is a fun activity a
nd a wonderful way to enjoy Maine. Harness Racing (or Trotters) is held throughhout the state of Maine at several Agricultural Fairs and at the historic Bangor Raceway in Bangor and at Scarborough Downs Raceway on Route 1 in Scarbourough Maine.
Most of the racers, breeders, trainers and announcers involved in Maine Harness Racing are from Maine or from one of the other New England states. Harness racing is one of the most popular Maine spectator sports - attracting thousands annually. Wagering on harness racing is permitted at harness racing tracks and at fairgrounds in Maine.
The Maine State Harness Racing Commission oversees racing in the state. The Commission is appointed by the Governor and also oversees Off-Track Betting facilities. The USTA (United States Trottong Assocation) is a national organization that promotes the sport. USTA was founded in 1939. Since 1948 the organization has been headquartered in Columbus, Ohio. They have more than 20,000 members.
