Kennebec Maine in the Movies

Empire Falls (HBO movie) (2005)
The story is set in a Maine mill town and was filmed in and around Skowhegan and Waterville, where Richard Russo lived when he taught at Colby College. Other Maine towns will also be the setting for scenes from the movie, including Kennebunkport, Lincolnville, Norridgewock, Oakland, and York. The beach scenes were filmed in Ogunquit.


Iron Will (1994)
Starring Kevin Spacey, Mackenzie Astin, and David Odgen, this inspirational drama is filmed in part in Bingham. It is the story of a man whose courage and strength get him through a cross-country dogsled race.

Thinner (1996)
By Maine author, Steven King, this book made movie is about a fat lawyer that finds himself growing “Thinner” when an old gypsy man places a hex on him. Except for some small shoots in New Hampshire, the film was exclusively shot in Maine. The Augusta House of Pancakes in Augusta is the location for a scene. Many other towns in the Mid-Coast region of Maine were used in the filming as well.
