As you are touring either up or down Rte 1 just above Portland, one of the local residence, so to speak, is the Down-East Village Restaurant. The Down East Village resides on the bank of the Royal River in Yarmouth, a quaint and historic village on the South Coast of Maine. This unique property has been family owned since 1949 and I had the pleasure of getting a flat tire just at that point on the road. I now know that it was my lucky day.
Lunch this day was award winning Clam Chowder, and I do believe this is one of the most memorable chowders I have eaten. Seafood makes up a large portion of the menu, lobster, shrimp, scallops in a variety of dishes. Five maine lobster entrees alone just for lunch. We selected baked haddock with a honey crumb topping. This fresh fish entree was superb. The Maine blueberry cobbler was also a big hit in the restaurant.
The Down-East Village Restaurant is open seven days a week for breakfast, (they have a lobster and Cabot Cheese Stuffed omlete), lunch, and dinner. A peek at the dinner menu showed they do Lobster Pie, Seafood Au Gatin, a seafood casserole, maine shrimp and scallop scampi. For the appetite gear more for meat, poutry and vegatarian there are many items like Chicken Dijon, Lasagna, Duck, Chicken Pot Pie, and Prime Rib.
On you next trip up or down Rte. 1 above Portland, below Freeport, look for the Down-East Village Restaurant. They come Highly recommended. Tell them MELiving.com sent you!
