I did what I always do...went to the Southern Maine Coast for at a few days. However, this time was different. I needed to write about some of the best places in the area to "break bread" as they say. And so I ate, and I ate, and continued to eat, then they rolled me home.
Let's start with the morning.
The best place ( I have thought this for years) to get a quick cup of coffee or tea and a muffin, scone, fresh bread and pastries is Bread and Roses in Ogunquit. They have been in business since 1989, and they are always busy, and always excellent. Looking for a sit down breakfast? The Egg & I and Congdon Donut Shop both on Route 1 between Wells and Kennebunk are known for their fantastic complete breakfasts.
Lunch suggestions...
Drive to Cape Porpoise, a small village just north of Kennebunkport. There you'll find a small take out or eat in snack bar located right on the water. It is the home to the best clam chowder, fabulous crab cakes, and outstanding lobster. It's nothing fancy, just good food. For something only slightly more formal, try The Landing in downtown Kennebunport. Have your lunch sitting on the deck, overlooking the inlet. It's fabulous on a cool day, as the sea breeze enhances the appetite. For another suggestion, try the onion rings at Pier Pizza in Old Orchard Beach.
Looking for a great dinner?
There are many places along Route 1 like Jakes, The Lobster Pound, The Maine Diner, or Billy's To Go on the Mile Road in Wells that are open for dinner. Billy's Chowder House also on the Mile Road is a long time favorite. Nobody serves better native Maine Fried Shrimp than they do. Of course we have other favorites, like Lord's On the Water in Wells. Try their baked stuffed lobster, and the chocolate brownie sundae. For the landlubber, The Steak House on Route 1 where you can dine on ribs, steaks, chicken, as well as Seafood.
If you're searching for great lobster...
Try Barnacle Billy's on the water in Perkins Cove in Ogunquit. Order at the counter, and sit where you can. If more a formal setting is required, go next door to Barnacle Billy's II. Same great food, more selection and a much more formal atmosphere.
